Had a complete system installed 4 years ago, 2 air handlers,2 condenser units, boiler and amtrol for hot water.Service man came and said compressor locked up drawing 40+ amps and that it needed to be replaced. Was told parts are under warrentee but labor was not. He wants 1500.00 to fix including 350 in parts, what would cause a 4 year old system to die and does 1500 seem like a fair amount to fix. please any help out there.

Compressors are like anything else. Sometimes you get one that just fails. Maybe a small piece of debris got in there, or maybe just a defect... Hard to say.
1500.00 seems a little high for a warranty compressor replacement, and the only parts/materials necessary are refrigerant, nitrogen, torch gasses, solder and such. The whole job should take about 3-4 hours.
Get a second opinion and ask them to try a hard start kit on the unit.

I have a Carrier Model 38TKB system which was installed 6/10/03 never had a problem with the air conditioning system. On 6/3/08 three days before my 5 yr warranty expired I had my a/c system tuned-up. At which time the service tech said everything looked great. On 6/13/08 I arrived home to find the temperature in my home at 80 degrees (at night) and only the fan working with no air coming through. I call the service company who performed the the tune-up for over 12 hours and was told it would be 95 dollars for them to come out and look at my a/c system. They came out and said that my compressor (both components) and fan had seized up and needed to be replaced. It would take 4 days to get the parts and over $600 in labor to replace the parts not under warranty (everything but the compressor). I don't feel I should be paying for anything since 6 weeks earlier their own service tech told me every thing was great, so great in fact that he did not change the filter nor did he oil the motor. Anyway is there a place for people like us to turn to when we feel we are being taken advantage of? I feel that you should not be paying for any parts or labor if your system is only 4 yrs old; and I feel that I should not have to pay since the service tech who came to service my system tells me "everything is great".

Your fan motor is permanently sealed and lubricated which means it can't be lubricated. If your filter was clean then why should it have been replaced? If you should not pay for repairs then who should? It's your equipment, your responsibility as the homeowner.
