Help!! 2.5 Ton Goodman Heat Pump, when unit first turns on in cool the suction psi is around 35-45 psi and stays steady for about 15-20 mins then psi slowly starts rising and steadies out at 70-75 psi depending on conditions. Problem is if unit doesnt start to raise psi quickly enough evaporator starts to freeze. Filter is clean, evaporator is clean, condensor is clean, and evaporator fan is running good on high speed. Is it a restriction at the orifice? Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Might be a restriction, but the pressures come back into normal range. Usually with a restriction it's the other way around. Pressures start out semi-normal the suction pressure starts to drop. Is this condition new - ie: has the unit worked fine in the past or has this condition been there since install.

Could be the wrong line size causing improper refrigerant delivery to the coil, or the time delay on the indoor fan might be getting wonky. I've replaced a lot of those time delay relays with regular no-delay fan relays on Goodman indoor units because they intermittently fail.

Orifice. Compressor was replaced in April 08! Unit seemed to be working fine until about a week ago.

Superheat and subcooling readings would really compliment those pressures, and tell you/us exactly what the problem is. Note how the temps change as the pressures change. Use a thermometer, I recommend the electrotherm with a clamp probe.

Sh temps are 45-50 when unit first comes on and 5-10 when unit finally steadies out after 30 mins

"Orifice. Compressor was replaced in April 08!"

The fact the compressor was replaced recently means that could be the source of the problem. It could be they didn't pull sufficient vacuum for long enough, Could be crap in the system.

Unfortunately,in either case, you need to recapture the freon, then open and check the orifice for debris, evacuate the system properly and recharge. Also replace the filter/dryer and consider a sight glass for moisture and approximate charge. If possible, put it cose to the evap coil. Good luck.

Thanks guy, that was my exact thinking but I guess i wanted someone with a little more experience to verify that thought.
