I have a Goodman system outside unit CPLJ48-1 and Air Handler AR61-1. The unit is about 5 years old and the last few months(4) the interior fan will sometime not start and the coils freeze up. I shut down the system turn on the fan only to defrost and then switch the ac back on and the system works fine for a day or two and ten does the same all over again. Occasionally I have to switch the fan switch on the thermostat back and forth to get the fan to come on. I replaced the thermostat to make sure there was no issue there, the problem came back. less than 24hrs later the problem returned. I am suspecting a relay or the motor, maybe the capacitor on the side of the motor. Can anyone help me narrow down what is wrong, by providing me some test procedures? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks. By the way the outside unit and fan appear to always come on with no issues.

Your Goodman unit uses a time delay relay for the blower motor. Most of the time, these will start to fail, then completely give out and not allow the fan to run at all. I would recommend replace the time delay relay or better yet, just change it out with a standard relay.

Thanks for the quick rely. The time delay relay you are talking about is located in the airhandler attached to the rear wall of the unit. There is no Ckt board. Do the fan motor wires connect directly to the time delay relay?? Capacitor is located on the motor. Any suggestions on where I can research replacement parts?

I agree with TnNATE, replace your timer or just install a DPDT relay with a 24 volt coil.

If you decide to use a standard DPDT relay with a 24 volt coil...

This 2 ton example is using low speed (Red) instead of the black high speed wire that a 4 ton would use, but the timer is labeled fan control here.

"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.

you need a meter to check the capacitor, and fan relay, check mfd of capacitor and ohm out fan relay if fan relay is on board you will have to replace board if its bad, sounds like a capacitor going bad though.good luck
