Two issues- 12 yo air heat pump -rad and some pipe freezing up due to lack of coolant from leaking pipe. Can homeowner -reasonably mechanically inclined-replace all pipe?

-When the present air heat pump packs it in I am on 5 acres and within 150 ft of Lake Ont so can do ground or water heat pump, does either represent significant savings in heating and cooling Vs my current 12 yo air heat pump?

Yes you can repair the leak if you can find it and it's accessable. HOWEVER, one major problem. You need to remove the refrigerant and that requires someone with an EPA license and that usually means an HVAC company has to get involved. Use soapy water to see if you can locate the leak. Otherwise let the HVAC company that will top off the system find it and be sure you get to see exactly where it is.

Since the unit is 12 years old you might top it off for the rest of this season and start researching geothermal heat pumps. Much depends on your climate.
