My bathroom ceiling fan has crapped out. I mean died. Is it cheaper (and/or safer) for me to try to fix it myself? Or is this definitely a job for an electrician?

Usually it is best to get an electrician to hook it up. You may have to go into the attic to disconnect/reconnect it. If something goes wrong he is licensed and the insurance company/fire inspector won't go after you. There are electrical code requirements for clearances etc which may have changed and only he will know. We had a church school burn halfway down when one of them overheated and caught on fire. The sheet rock/fire separation saved the rest of the complex.

When my bathroom fan failed, I was lucky enough to find a matching one at Home depot. 2 screws and it just plugs into a standard power outlet. I reused the old housing.
