I'm trying to gain about a foot of space in my utility room, and the chimney for my furnace is whats holding it up, as the chute wraps around the back of the unit and then goes up through the chimney, which is about 1'x1' in the corner of the room and extends up through another floor about 16 feet. I would like to have the exhaust simply exit through the side of the wall next to the furnace but I'm not sure what kind of code restrictions there might be with that.

First of all, does that seem like something that would be feasible, and secondly, what kind of code would I need to check to see if that is legal, just the building code of the jurisdiction, or is there some kind of safety code I need to be looking for? Thanks!

Most furnaces unless they are high efficiency cannot be vented horizontally thru a wall. They have to be specially designed, UL, AGA (Underwriters laboratory, American Gas Assoc) and other code certified for that. Some odd Yorks could but it needed a special vent connector. Contact a dealer of your unit to find out. Usually discolored the wall also. Bad for wood or vinyl siding.
