I just moved into a house we bought and the a/c has decided to malfunction. I do not know anything about central air and I was hoping someone could help. When I turn the unit on to cool, cool air does trickle out of the vents but I noticed that the fan on the outside unit does not spin at all. The house also does not cool down at all. Also on the display panel on the thermostat there is a snowflake object that blinks when I have the unit on cool. The only way air blows thru the vents is when I have it on ON/Fan and not AUTO/Fan. But the unit outside still does nothing. Thank you for any help.

First thing is getting the outdoor fan running ASAP. Don't use the AC until you fix the fan.

With the disconnect to the outdoor condenser off, try spinning the fan with a pencil. Does it spin easily and quietly. If yes, now put the disconnect back and call for cooling. Again, CAREFULLY spin the fan with a pencil. If the fan tries to spin, turn everything off, pull the disconnect and replace the condenser capacitor with an identical one.
