Good morning everyone.
I am running dual Carrier HVAC units installed around 2002, and one of the two is not working properly. The system comes on and blows air, but it's not cool air, the outdoor unit fan comes on. I replaced the air filters mid-month, and do a relatively decent job of doing so on a monthly schedule. I'm not sure if the compressor is coming on since I can't turn it off and on myself and hear it from inside. The large copper pipe coming from the malfunctioning unit's outdoor unit is NOT cold, and the smaller copper pipe is nowhere near as warm as the working unit. I had a problem with the system a couple of years ago, and found that one of the wires had a short in it going to the contact. It was a very clean cut and looked suspicious, but I digress. Once I repaired that wire, the system worked beautifully for 2 years, until now.
I've cleaned the outdoor unit, but need a fin comb to help with some small spots that were attacked by a weed-whacker by my errant gardner, but other than that, I keep them clean and clear of debris.
I know there's likely several things that COULD be wrong, but I've gotten frustrated with looking for sites to help me help myself. I like to know what the problem is, and hate being an uninformed consumer.
