I've heard that adding Marvel Mystery Oil to home heating oil (1 quart to 100 gallons) will increase BTU output and will help keep the filter, fuel line and nozzle clean. Another claim is that Marvel Oil, by making the system more efficient, will help you save fuel oil. Has anyone tried adding Marvel Oil to their fuel tank and what results did you get?

I agree, I would not reccomend adding anything with the word "mystery" to your tank. It won't be a mystery when the furnace stops running. There are many other things you can do to improve efficiency, most importantly a yearly cleaning.

Sounds like "Snake Oil" to me. I would never add any additives to fuel oil or gasoline/car engine (scams). It may change the lubricating property of the oil and harm the pump. Apparently the new low sulphur oils are causing that problem already.

Unfortunately alchemy is not good science. We all would love to make gold from lead but it doesn't happen. That being said you need to research diesel fuel additives if you want to try and improve your burner efficiency over the heating season. #2 fuel oil and diesel are practically the same. The big difference is replacing an oil burnel nozel is so easy and expensive compared to replacing diesel fuel injectors, additives have become a way to keep diesel engine fuel injectors cleaner longer.
Will an additive improve efficiency? It might but you still want to replace the nozzle each year. Let us know what your research discovers.

don't forget to change the oil filter @ the same time as the nozzle!
