I am in the process of replacing a very old furnace. My contractor has recommended a Whirlpool Gold 2 Stage WGFB (80% eff.)

I can find almost nothing written about it, good or bad. Does anyone have any experience with this unit (or the 2 stage WGFB units?) Are they good, bad, brand new? I'm just wondering what I am getting, and if there are better options out there.

See if it's an OEM product. If it is, see who really makes the furnace. As long as the installer is reputable and gives you a year guarantee, you should be fine. And an 80% is okay as long as you don't live in Alaska... colder climates need more efficiency usually.

Whirlpool is made by Nordyne, same as the Maytag, and Frigidaire. I haven't worked on a Whirlpool, but have worked on Maytag and Frigidaire, we didn't have a real good track record with them. Some problems we had were bad limits, codenser motor DOA, control boards. I don't like how the stamp their panels out and leave sharp and bare metal edges on them.
