Just got home from a week's vacation to find the house stiflingly warm. The digital thermostat reads cooling. But, the temp is 86 degrees. The air flow is adequate but barely cool at all. Before I make the call for a weekend repair I thought I look for a genius here. Any help would be appreciated.

The evaporator coil could be frozen.Unit could be low on freon.Check and make sure outdoor unit is running.

I did check...... The unit outside is not running. But there is air flow coming from the vents. Just not cool.

The indoor unit gives you you're airflow that's where you're blower motor is located.Without the outdoor unit you have no cooling. If you have a meter check to see if you're getting 220-240 volts to contactor, also check for 24 volts to coil on contactor.Could be something as simple as a contactor or a capacitor. If you're not familiar with a meter or electrical best to wait on service tech.

The service tech that came out found that the circuit breaker kept flipping off every time he would try to reset it. That, he said, indicated that the compressor ( I think that's what he called it ) was blown and needs to be replaced. Is the contactor or capacitor something different?

i like check up your electric box and it is ok for condensing unit braker is on position. even it looks like on position turn it off and turn on again and check up condensing unit is working. if it is still not working need to call service man.

good luck

Well, I just had a service tech come out. I think he was trying to sell me more than I needed.....suggesting that it would be best to replace the outside unit and the coils......nearly $4000. worth of work. But when I balked and asked what we could do minimumly he said replace the compressor....@ around $1000.00. Does this sound right?

Sounds about right. One question though. Did your tech verify that it was the compressor by opening the outdoor unit and checking continuity between compressor and ground? It could also be rodent chewed wires shorted to ground or a crankcase heater.
