I have a Rheem unit in my garage that is about 20 years old. The outside unit just died.

My neighbor is having a new system installed and gave me his old one which is also a Rheem and about as old as the one in my garage. How can I tell whether I can pair his outside unit with the inside unit from my system?

Write down your units' model number. Write down "his" units' model number. If they are the same... go forit. If they differ at all... post it here and we'll help you out.

Ok, here's what I found. Both outside units labels are unable to be read. However, the inside units have the SAME model number. The outside units look a little different in shape. His shorter and longer, where mine is taller and not as long.

I am assuming that since both inside unit model numbers are identical, then I am good to go.

If I choose to swap this out myself, I know to turn off the power source, but how do I shut off the freon so it doesn't escape? I know the techs left the freon in it.

Theoretcially, you are probably right that they'r eboth the same. Its a hit-or-miss thing. I'm not advising you to do it... but I think you can make up your own mind on that.
According to Federal Law, you have to be licensed to handle refrigerants. NOW.. with that being said-- I cannot advise you on what to do or not to do. I can tell you that it (the freon) must be either pumped down or recovered. Hiring a pro isnt all bad... and might be worth your while on this one.

Thanks for the advice Dan. My neighbors HVAC guy just came over and gave me an estimate to install it. I will let them do it because I tend to blow things up.

Not a bad idea then!!! unless, of course, we're talking bridges in Afghanistan!!!

Just curious... what did he quote you to do the work?

$450. That included a new dryer and disassembling the outside unit and cleaning it. He will use the existing inside unit. Good deal, bad deal?

Thats a good price.... for you. He must be doing it on the "side".... sounds like he is going to do it the right way though.

Actually his boss was with him but told him in front of me that he could do it on the side to cut out the middle man.
