My 14 year old A/C Rudd Achiever unit is not working. I checked the fuses and the power to the unit and they are fine. I manually moved the fan blades and they move freely. Then I visually checked the dual capacitor and it is not bulging out at the top. Does anybody know what else could cause the unit not to work? Oh yeah, I did pay my electric bill so that is not the problem.

A cap does not have to be swollen to be bad.
The compressor and fan motor would be hot though.

Is the contactor pulled in?
Do you have 240VAC at L1 to L2 and T1 to T2?

If it is not pulled in, do you have 24 volts to it?

No, the contactor is not pulled in and it is not receiving 24 volts. I pushed the contactor in and the unit ran so, the unit is fine. Now, I have to find out the problem between the thermostat and the unit. Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate the help.

Look for the 2 small wires that bring the 24 volts to the condenser contactor. Be sure they have not been damaged as they leave the condenser and enter the house. Weedwackers are nast on wires.

If all looks good, not the wire color and go the th furnace/air handler inside. You will see where those 2 wires connect to a control board at the Y and C terminals. Measure for 24 volts AC between the R and C terminal. If no voltage, look for a small fuse on the control board... may be blown. If you have 24 there, call for cooling and measure for 24 volts between Y and C.

I looked at the wires in the outside unit and they looked good. I then measured at the connections you told me and ~27 volts was measured. So, since both of the test came up ok I am going to assume that the wires must not be connected somewhere between the furnace/air handler and the outside unit. I will check them again carefully and if you have any more suggestions please let me know thank you!

Hello:

I checked the connector to the contactor again and I made a mistake measuring the voltage the first time. There is 24V going to the contactor but it is not pulled in. When I press it in the system cuts on. So I guess I have a bad contactor?
