My a/c is cooling fine, especially considering it's been over 100 degrees here for several days now. My problem is that when the unit kicks on, I hear a bump. Then, when it kicks off, it kind of shudders for less than a second. Any ideas what might be causing this and what I could do to stop it, if anything?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi,
I'd check set screw for the fan blade is not loose.

Can you tell me where I might find the set screw?

Sounds like your blower wheel may be separating from the main hub or have a serious problem with the fins coming loose. Best to get a tech to check it or you may SOL at 100 deg when it breaks loose completely.

Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna check the set screw thing first, on the off chance that it might actually be something simple. I took the entire squirrel cage and housing out about a year ago to clean it and didn't notice anything unusual, but it wasn't making that noise then, either. If the wheel is separating and/or the fins are coming loose, is this something I could see for myself if I took the squirrel cage out again? And if so, could I fix it or replace it myself? I'm living on student loans here and could stand to save some dough anywhere I can.
