I have a goodman 10 seer 2.5 ton central a/c unit with a problem. I have been told that the black cuclindrical part (condensor / compressor) is bad after a lightning strike. I have been told that there are no parts for these unit and I must upgrade to $2000.00 unit with at least 13 seer. Can anyone help with some advice. The unit does run, but it doesnt get cold. It's about 7 years old and in good shape otherwise.

The first guy wanted to replace the whole thing, inside out to my furnace over 2K. Guy # 2 said it was just the black domed cylinder in the middle of the unit on the ground. He opened it and showed me fried wires. Guy # 2 said the condesor or compressor was bad. He further stated that for the price of a replacement - 6-700, he could amlomst replace the whole outside unit. The he later said the outside 2.5 ton 10 seer units were no longer available and we would also need to go 13 seer for over 2K in price. We got struck and the unit worked OK for another summer before the problem surfaced. We are using window units for now - and they are OK, but they only cool certain rooms. it sucks.

Yes, the compressor is still available as a change-over. They probably don't like taking the time to do a conversion.

Was anything else in your home damaged by this lightning? If not then call another company. Many hackers will claim that lightning struck and destroyed a system because they can't figure out the actual problem. The second opinion will surely be better than the first.

The prices you stated are about right. The tech was telling you the truth about only 13 SEER is available for units. You would just have to decide if you want to spend about half to fix your OLD unit or spend the difference to get NEW.

"The unit does run, but it doesnt get cold." The outdoor unit it a coil, a compressor and a fan all in one package. Inside the condenser is the fan and compressor. You need to determine if the compressor (the cylindrical metal part attached to the base) is running. If you are not good with electricity, get a 2nd opinion. And have the tech show you where the wires connect to the compressor. Ifany has become disconnected, reattach it and see if the unit will run. Also be sure the tech checks the run capacitor. Your unit may be fine.
