I'm having trouble with a unit where i'm getting readings of enough refrigerant in the system but the compressor is going into overload because of slugging. I thought it might be a clogged filter dryer but it is colder than the suction side. in my experience in the past if the filter dryer is clogged it gets hot with a high head pressure. So my question is, could there be a clog in the expansion valve? Or WTF is causing this to happen?

"enough refrigerant in the system" is inadequate info. Also I doubt the compressor is slugging if the suction line is not cold. You need to post the following info for help. If you service a/c these readings should be taken anytime there is a problem. suction pressure head pressure suction line temp liquid line temp outdoor ambient temp
