I have recently charged a unit that was freezing up. The unit operates at about 43*F at the evaporator coil and it is 90*F outside air temp. The house sits vacant on Lake Conroe during the week and the residents occupy the house only on the weekends. The vents, filters and air velocity all seem ok. I know the freezing is because of the demand to quickly remove all the humidity at once. How can I overcome this problem?

The evap temp is 43*F when the unit is checked and freezes up hours later. It must be an airflow problem or a restriction. The system is charged properly. The subcooling is 17*F. when checked. TXV bad maybe?

Humidity has nothing to do with an evaporator freezing up; and has everything to do with the fact that the evaporator surface temp. is below 32deg. You must understand the basic fundamentals of refrigeration, air distribution, and electrical theory. Knowing all of this, plus a few years in the field troubleshooting and the answers will come. Also, I concur with the Duke.

Are you sure that's why its freezing? I always thought that freeze-ups were caused by a lack of airflow, a lack of refrigerant, or sometimes the elusive restriction. So It's been recharged? What was the suction and head pressure? Superheat and subcooling? Or did you skip that part and just arbitrarily add freon instead? One more question. You reported that the coil was 43 degrees. How could it be freezing at that temperature?
