I just moved into my first home with central ac and love it. I know filters should be replaced when required to maintain the unit. My air exchanger (I think its called) is up in my attic and feeds the rooms thru ceiling vents.
I went up in my attic to see what size/type filter it requires. One skinny panel cover measuring 3-4" wide and 20something"'long I could remove. It "semed" the right size. No filter inside. This spot where I think a filter should go would be on the INTAKE side of the exchanger. I'm thining there should be filter on the EXHAUST side? NOTE: In the hallway ceiling is the return grate. It swings down to get at that filter. It has a filter which I cleand and reinstalled. But I keep thinking there should be filter like you see for sale at homies or lowes for few bucks some where?
I'm looking for info on the unit such as a owners manual. I also believe it's over 20 years old based on serial numer of #1987-5002. Was I right?

that is a filter grille in the hallway. replace that filter every month or two with a merv 7 pleated filter. you should only have one.
