So I went upto walmart and bought a Honeywell touchscreen. Came home and installed it like I had done at my previous house and 2 of my grand fathers rent houses. No big deal. Always followed directions and always labeled wires before pulling em off.

So I labeled all my wires and realized I had no W2 sticker in the pack. Ok so it was the only wire left hanging so I clipped the lead off so no exposed leads.

Wired the rest up tested the cool and it worked.

Tested the heat and the air never got hot.

So I started doing research and figured out I had a 2 stage Carrier heater and when I looked at the ancient thermostat there were 2 mercury switches for the heat and a single one for the cooling. Plus I traced wires back to the inside unit and clearly saw the wire labeled W2 and it ran directly to it's own strip. I seriously considered just putting w1 and w2 together but decided against that. It was designed to be different and seperate and with my known lack of HVAC knowledge I didn't want to rock the boat or mess up the unit.

The one thing I loved about the old therm was the auto with levers for hot and cold on top.

Well took the other back to walmart and hit lowes up to see what they had. I knew Homedepot had ritetemp therms as I put a lcd screen one in old house.

Anyway Lowes had the Hunter 44860 with auto ac/heat. I fell in love. So installed it and after playing with the settings got everything working.

So now that I look back and now know that I have a 2 stage heater why did the air never get hot with just stage 1 or W1 hooked up and W2 unhooked? Could I have a strip out? How do you test one? I have a digital multi meter. I work on cars replacing O2 sensor wiring, stereo installs, tracing hot wires out of radios, and helped a friend replace his electrical panel. So i have some hobby based wiring experience.

TIA for any information
