Hi there. Back again.

I have a Trane XE78 furnace/ac that is approx. 18 years old. The blower motor is making odd noises and it requires a hand start several times a day. It sounds like the bearings are going out on the motor.

Does anyone have a schematic or an easy way to take the fan out to look at it and replace if necessary?

Any thoughts? I can use all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance!

Scott

Turn off the power. Open the blower compartment door. Spin the squirrel cage by hand. Does it spin freely and quietly? If yes, replace the run capacitor that could be mounted on the motor or squirrel cage case. Do not use it until you replace the capacitor or you may fry the motor.

If the motor is noisy when you spin the squirrel cage then see if there is play in the motor shaft. If there is, start searching for a new motor. You still may have a bad capacitor ("and it requires a hand start...")and replacing it may buy you a few months before the motor finally dies.
