I’m a first time home buyer who just moved in a month ago and recently discovered water in my basement. It looks like the drip pan from my evaporator coil is over flowing. I took the condensation drain apart and cleaned a bunch of gunk out of the pipe. I then took the cover off the evaporator section and noticed a lot of debris in the drainage pan, and an empty section below the coils that looks like a filter holder. After cleaning all of the nastiness out I let the system sit 24hrs and allowed the floor to dry. I put everything back together but didn’t connect the condensation line outside and opted to put a bucket under the spout until I tested everything. I fired it back up and after cooling for 20 minutes the system went off and lots of water came rushing out, I thought I was done and left it on for a couple of hours only to find that the pan was overflowing again. It seems that the system only drains when it turns itself off. Is this because the pipe is not connected outside? I notice that there is a lot of air rushing in around the pipe area possibly causing the water to not drain. Also should there be a filter under the evaporator coils? It seems like it would drip onto it and cause mold. I will provide a diagram of my system (mines an older version) that shows were a filter should be when I get home...any ideas? This system was supposed to be serviced before we moved in, and I have the technician receipt but can’t reach them by phone.
Thanks,
Terry

Water may not drain out without a trap at the drain connection. There should also be a vent after the trap.
