I WOULD LIKE SOME PROFESSIONAL ADVISE.MY HOUSE IS 1375 SQ FEET HEATED.THE AIR HANDLER LEAK INTO THE SECONDARY PAN DUE TO AGE.THE UNIT IS A TRANE 3 TON 10 SEER HEATPUMP.I CALLED A CONTRACTOR FOR HIS OPION.HE TOLD ME A 2.5 TON 13 SEER AIR HANDLER SHOULD WORK IF CHANGED.I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME IMPUTS. THANKS,

Yes, did the contractor inspect the system and determine why it was leaking? A clogged drain can be easily rectified, even by DIYers. A rusted out drain pan is a different story.

I would not replace a 3 ton air handler with a 2.5 ton air handler unless you're planning on replacing the heatpump too (with a 2.5 ton unit). Age does not cause leaks. Your water leak is most likely from a clogged drain or drain pan, or a rotted drain pan.
