remodeling house, knocked cheap tstat off the wall with unit running and forgot to power down system before reattaching and blow the 5 amp fuse on the air handler, this is a 3 ton split system by the way.
I have narrowed the problem down to the white wire coming from the outside unit, as long as this wire is disconnected from the tstat it works normal but as soon as you try to hook it back to the tstat, pop! again. seems to be the w2 or aux heat? what has happened? and is there any harm in running the system with it disconnected? thanks in advance

Not until you need aux. heat, then you won't have it.
