Hey fellas. I work on Tranes, Carriers, Rheem/ Ruud, Tempstar, Millers, Thermoprides, Bryants and even some units that are 3 times my age. The only units I am totally unfamilliar with are those damn Lennox pulse furnaces.

I was sent on just a plain ol' clean and check the other day. New customer. They had a lennox pulse furnace, 10 years old. I fired her up...and immediately had a heart attack! Are those things supposed to sound like a damn jet plane taking off??!?!?!
I flipped through the manual and it mentioned something about an "air flapper valve" aka, piece of plastic, pain in the ass to get out. It wasn't ripped or torn, just dirty. Would a worn 'air flapper valve' cause this unit to sound like an earthquake? The unit heated up just fine. Other than the god awful noise, it's running in tip top shape.

Thanks for any help. I would greatly appreciate it.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

The pulse furnace was the original 90%er.They always sound like all h#ll is breaking loose.A dirty air diaphram isn't a big deal. You cam wipe most of the carbon off with a rag. Most parts are obsolete. They should also have the heat exchanger p[ressure tested every 3-5 years, and conducting the test is a pain in the rear. Not all pulse units requiredthe muffler.Lennox has even said to take some out.Depending on the problem and/or location.

They can be quite noisy. Been workin on them since the early 80's. A specialized unit that most non-Lennox techs have a hard time with. If it works fine leave it alone. Gettin real hard to get some parts for them. Should have mufflers on it unless some hacker installed it without them.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it did have a muffler. My parts guy was on the phone all day looking for that particular "air flapper valve" but he found it!
