okay, so here's the issue. the air inside the house is circulating, but it's a long way from conditioned air. been poking around the outdoor unit, and here's what i noticed (in my extremely amateur way). the unit outside seems to want to come on, i get a periodic humming coming from it, but without any fan movement. i pulled the cover off of the electrical compartment to have a look around, only things of note to a casual glance is that the cobwebs could use cleaning out, and what i believe to be the capacitor(s) look pretty old and rusty. judging by a comparison between the owner's manuals and what i'm seeing, it looks like the capacitor(s) have been changed out at some point in the past, they have a date in 2000 on them, so they're at least 8 years old.

one other thing i only just noticed is that the fan motor is getting quite hot, so it seems that at least some power is getting to it.

sorry if i'm kind of vague and woefully uninformed, i'm well experienced with fighter jet avionics, but electric and a/c systems in my own home can really get me lost. *sheepish grin*

Need to look at that capacitor if it is swollen on top then it's shorted and needs to be replaced. Best idea is to call around and find a good contractor in your area and have the unit checked out.
