MY BROTHER HAVE A 4TON TRANE HEATPUMP THAT IS 20YEARS OLD,AND A WEATHERTRON THERMOSTAT.THE CONDENSOR CUTS OFF OFTEN,WHILE THE TEMPERATURE INSIDE THE HOUSE IS HOT.I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME HELP AND GUIDEANCE HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THIS THERMOSTAT SO I CAN DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. MUCH THANKS,

May not be your thermostat. Most homowners think the thermostat is at fault. Your outdoor unit may have a high and/or low pressure switches which kills the 24v to the contactor in the event the system is low on charge (low Pressure - LPS on wiring diagram). High pressure switch will trip if your outdoor coil are dirty or the unit is overcharged, outdoor fan motor stops, etc (high pressure - HPS on diagram)

Hope this helps. Save som money and call for service before blaming the thermostat.
