I am interested in used a Weil-Mclain Gold Series boiler, Model number wtgo-4. It is about 7 years old (not sure) and is rated at 85% efficiency. It is coming out of a house that switched to geothermal. I am considering replacing my ~28 year old boiler with this.

Can anyone give any insight on this boiler (good, bad, maintenance, leaks, or ?)

Thanks

Phil

Is it the right size/BTUs for your house? Very good brand name/we sell them. I would not pay too much for it as the ventor fan has wear and tear as well as the circuit board etc. For all the hassle of replacing a boiler I would go with a new one. Don't know what they sell for as my plumbers do them. May have a issue with the gas inspector when installing a used unit. Check with them first. I would buy a new one as you have a warranty. There are specific rules as to venting them etc and you should get an experienced plumber to do the job or it will turn into a huge mess.

thank you for your comments. Some feedback:
------
Is it the right size/BTUs for your house?

Response - I will check its size against the size of my old unit. I believe I can get away with smaller unit because the mid 1920's windows and are being replaced with new double insulated glass windows.

Response - It is very inexpensive ($300). The person would like to free up the garage space it now occupies. I am told a similar unit in my area runs ~2K.

Response - it is an oil fired boiler. I don't understand the comment

The old boiler vents into an 8-inch flue. The one I am considering requires a 6-inch flue. Other than needing a 8inch to 6 inch reducer are there other concerns? The installer is an experience plumber, however, not with HVAC. The plan was to pull the old and replace it with the new.

Again thanks for the information.

Phil

Didn't know it was oil. Sounds like a good deal. Gas units require special venting. I would be careful about the venting. If the old chimney is masonry and unlined it may get too cool and you may get creosote buildup and a fire later. High efficiency oil burners may run a cooler stack temp and require a A/B vent/Selkirk type chimney. I would get some pro advice from a licensed chimney company about what type to use. If you don't your insurance may be void if you have a fire. It ain't worth the risk. Check this out:

Hi,

Again, thank you for very helpful information. The chimney is vented into a class-A 8-inch pipe by Security. I don't recall the model number.

I will have an inspector evaluate the installation after it is done.
