I have a Tempstar 2200 split system gas/electric. I noticed that it seemed quieter than normal. The outside condenser unit/compressor was running. The condenser cooling fan was not. I check inside vents blowing cool air. Back to condenser, fan still not turning but could feel the heat coming up from cooling coils. Took grate off top and carefully turned fan. Fan turned easily, fan and motor shaft would free spin for 10 to 15 seconds. After about 3 or 4 minutes the fan turned on and continued to run till compressor turned off. Over the past week I have noticed this same senario several times. Is this normal or is something slowly going wrong?

Two possibilities... the fan motor run capacitor is bad or the contactor may not be making a good connection and is bad, depending on how it's wired in the circuit.
Pull the disconnect to the condenser (240 volt line). Open the electrical compartment on the condenser. Look at the capacitor... any signs of physical distortion... bulging on the top or sides? If yes, replace is ASAP with an identical capacitor. If not, look at the contactor(looks like a relay) Do the points look burnt and pitted? If yes, replace it. If the contactor looks good, replace the fan motor run capacitor anyway... best bet to fix the problem for the least cost.

SAFETY FIRST: NEVER PUT YOURSELF AT RISK!!! Check the little bare copper line at the condenser. If it is extremely hot then your condenser fan, run capacitor or both is done. The compressor has an internal safety (overload) to protect it. You need to call a service company.
