i came accross a problem with a hunter fireplace model#hfs40-3, the burner fires when i turn the gas valve to the on position even if the t-stat is not calling for heat. im looking for some pointers.... thank you

Short in the thermostat wires. 2 of them are touching each other. Check by the burner, may have got overheated/melted together. Disconnect one on the gas valve and see if it closes. VERY rare that the valve will be faulty/stuck open. Don't remove the one from the pilot generator or the pilot and everything will drop out.

i removed the thermostat completely off the wall and disconected the wires and still the same problem,

Hi,
If you suspect shorted wire, how about removing wires at the other end(FP end). Or gas valve might be stuck open.

Remove one at the gas valve. Follow the wires from there and look for damage.
