Have an older oil furnace, from the fifties, all new heat chamber, igniter box, transformer box, etc. Works doesn't work, works for a while doesn't work, etc. Replace wiring to thermostat. Worked for a while, then doesn't, when thermostat calls for heat, furnace comes on, doesn't fire, shuts itself down, direct wire from igniter box, furnace ignites. Off & on problem, can't pinpoint. Thermostat is old mercury activated. Any ideas, Becket burner.

RU on a stack control or cad cell saftey? Post and let me know. IF its cad cell the eye may be covered with soot and not sensing flame or be bad. There is a resistance check for those as well. If its stack control clean the hot and cold contacts and the helix. If it has a cad cell you probably have a honeywell R8G14 primary take one lead off the primary cad cell connection f it runs you got a bad primary.

Last time the oil filter and nozzle were changed? Did the tech bleed the line after the filter was replaced THEN put in a new nozzle? Check electrodes for possible cracks in porcelan. Be sure electrodes are set properly. Bleed oil at the burner pump (coffee can works fine) to be sure you are getting a strong flow. I am assuming a new transformer means you are getting good spark. Be sure the flue is clean and the over-fire draft is good.

Yes, all that was done, filter/nozzle/bled,got spark from electrodes, replaced thermostat yesterday, turned up, furnace came on and fired, then during night, called for heat, igniter box clicked itself off, didn't fire again, sooo not thermostat. Igniter box??? Maybe..?
