This is an interesting post. If you are unaccustomed to the smell of lp gas exhaust, it can take a while to get used to. If the unit is oversized, corbon monoxidide can be a GRAVE CONCERN. You must have enough air in the space to satify the burner, and enough air to dissiaptate the exhaust gasses. Now carbon monoxide is sentless. But CO is produced through a poorly functioning heater. This could be a VERY SERIOUS MATTER! Please call a HVAC service company and have them check out the heater.

A vent free heater still has exhaust and without a vent the exhaust goes into your home. That is what you are smelling. Your problems may get worse as time goes on. Another product of combustion is very acidic moisture. This in time can cause mold in your home. I work for an LP company and see these heaters on a daily basis. I've smelled the odors you are experiencing and seen the mold. Here in Ny State, these heaters were legalized only as a secondary source of heat. More often than not I see people with these problems because they are trying to use them as the primary source of heat. Running a primary source of heat such as a forced air furnace with the vent free heater helps keep the moisture under control and keeps air moving to help the odor problem. Personally if it were up to me I think they shoud be outlawed. Good luck with it.
If in doubt call a pro !

One thing you want to get for sure is a carbon monoxide detector for your house if you plan on using it. These heaters are not made to heat a house, but only as a back up. When burning these heaters you are also supposed to leave a window or door open some for fresh air, which nobody does. The other problem you will have is high moisture when operating this unit. You need to have a service company come out and verify thats its operating properly or not.
