Hello all, my first post so go easy.

I currently have an old Lennox HP20-261 2 stage heatpump system. I have a few questions if anyone has the time to answer.

First, there is a problem with the external heatpump, in winter time (florida), it freezes up into a solid block of ice. The defrost never kicks in. Could this be a problem with the thermostat or is there a thermal sensor on the external unit that needs replacing? Is so, could you suggest a place to get the part?

Secondly, this system runs constantly in the summer. It runs, and runs, and runs, and I know for a fact it has a leak. I have had several companies out here to look at the unit and they always try to sell me a whole new one or say I need to replace the entire system or coil. They never can tell me exactly where the leak is. Every time I press the issue it's always a generic response like "somewhere in the coil". I understand the business better than they think, but I am stuck using a very limited list of contractors at my location (two). Each contractor works with the other to "milk" as much money from people as possible. I am no fool. I plan on renting this place out in a year so I have no interesting in replacing the entire system, I just want an honest assessment, and to fix the leak. I find it impossible to find an honest contractor here in my FL area. Commission outweighs honesty here by a factor of 10. Can anyone explain how I should speak to the technician? What exactly I need to ask for to have them find the leak? If they say it's in the coil should I ask if it's a specific part of the coil? Etc... Thank you!

Another question I had was regarding the thermostat. It has a very old mercury mechanical thermostat on it. I would like to replace it but I am finding it hard to find a thermostat that the women agrees on. She wants a touch interface on it and programmable. My problem so far has been finding a newer LCD thermostat that has all the features and also accommodates a 2 stage heatpump with Emergency Heat backup (or AUX). Can anyone suggest some companies to look at?

First of all let me state right up front that I am not an hvac contractor and have no real " knowledge " of the business. However within the last month I spent 18 grand replacing 2 entire heat pump systems ( including outside condensors, air handlers, strip heat, new plenums, and partial duct replacement ) and I can tell you I got an education during that time. Like you I went from a couple of old mechanical stats to brand new ones... My contractor put in Honeywell Vision Pro TH8320U stats. These are touchscreen programmable stats that work with heat pumps ( up to 3 heat / 2 cool systems ). They are 7 day programmable and believe me, easy as can be to use. We have one for each system and we love them. Hope this helps.
