My Rheem RGDJ Furnace is not giving heat when it's turned on with the thermostat switch. Moreover, I smell gas and have to shut off the heater. What could be the problem? Please help! It's getting cold soon. Thanks.

Is that the modulating furnace, horizontally mounted RGJD unit? If so, it has spark ignition.

If you smell gas, then pressure switches are O.K. Could very likely be flame sensor needs cleaning/replacing. How long has it been in service?

Thanks for the reply folks! I had a serviceman looked at it. He said the control board has gone bad. Repair cost $650!!! Should I have someone else look at it for 2nd opinion or go ahead?

Probably your HSI, hot surface igniter is burnt out. Call a servicetech.

Thanks for the reply. I shall have another servicetech look at it. I am suspecting igniter also. Is it common the control board go bad suddnely? This is about 15 years old furnace. Still puzzled.

The average life is 10 yrs. It may not be energizing the igniter and the guy maybe telling you the truth. If he is wrong then he will be selling you an igniter and have to take the board back. I would trust him.

Thanks for reply! It turned out that the control board has gone bad indeed. In addition, flame sensor had to be polished clean. Another servicetech charged me under $400 for over 4 hours of thwe whole repair job. Now waiting for the cold wind. hmmmm...
