Tried starting my furnace for the first time this year only to run into this problem.

On call for heat, inducer fan comes on. Then I hear a click that should be the hot suface ignitor, but it never glows. After that the gas valve comes on. It (the gas valve) only stays on for a few seconds before going off. The furnace goes through this cycle for several minutes before finally going off altogether.

I can get the burners to light with the use of a lighter. When I do this, the unit runs through a normal cycle, but only for 15 or 20 minutes before turning off. At which point I have to turn off at disconnect to get it to work again.

On occasion the red diode on circuit board will give 4 flashes, which instructions say means ignition failure check ground. At first I thought the HSI was the problem until I saw this failure signal. Now I'm not sure where to go from here because I know it's dangerous to keep lighting the unit with a lighter

It's a Frigidaire 80% natural gas furnace. If more technical info from the unit is needed please feel free to ask.

I hope you guys can help because it's really starting to get cold.

Thanks in advance,

jmo.

Your ignitor(HSI) is defective/cracked.

Replace the ignitor and stop lighting it with a lighter :)

Your code indicated flame failure check ground. It thinks your flame sensor is not working but there was no flame to sence.(truely the code description should just read flame failure) Anyway you confirmed the rest of the unit is functional buy manually lighting it and getting it to cycle..

get an ignitor

Thanks TKG. I'll pick up new ignitor at Grainger on my way home from work this evening.

IF you have a volt meter and want to be 100% sure check for 120v going to the ignitor in the rare case the the board is not powering the hsi, but its really rare

TKG,
I didn't think to check past post to see if you gave another reply before I posted again.
I finally got another ignitor, but now know that it (the ignitor) wasn't the problem. In my new post, I state that I'm looking to find a circuit board for the brand furnace I own (which seems to be as rare as the board not making the ignitor work). Hope you can help.
It's a Frigidaire 80% Model# G6RA096c-16.
