I have a Rheem gas fired forced air furnace. I can light the pilot by pressing the red button, but when I release the button after 1 minute, the pilot goes out. I just replaced the thermocouple with a new one, but still does not work. What next? Thanks.

how can I tell if the gas valve unit is receiving power, and also works? I can use a multimeter.

Your type of gas valve uses the thermocouple to generate a small amount of electricity. The voltage is small and is measured by millivolts around 21 millivolts will keep the pilot valve open. If the pilot hood is dirty and the orifice is dirty you are not getting enough flame to generate the voltage needed to keep the pilot valve open. Try cleaning and light again and if that does not work you may have a problem with the gas valve itself and it may need changing.
