Hi everyone,

I've tried searching everywhere on the web but can't find the answer to this so hoping someone can answer. I have a carrier weathermaker 8000TS. I've read all over the internet that it's big advantage is that it is 2 speed and runs at a lower speed for much longer periods of time and goes to a higher speed rarely ... when needed. Does it need a special thermostat to do that? or does it need to be installed in a certain way. I'm not sure how to check it, but it doesn't seem to have more then one speed and it certainly doesn't seem like it is running 90% of the time.

Thanks,
Howard

There are 2 ways to hook up that furnace. With a true 2 stage thermostat which means you would have a wire hooked up to w1 and w2 on the circuit board. Or using a single stage thermostat and then flipping a dip switch on the circuit board which allows the 2nd stage to cut in after about 13 minutes I believe. Carrier built some fuzzy logic/algorithm into the circuit board which determines when to cut into 2nd stage by monitoring the length of cycles. Can be quite confusing for the average guy. I would recommend using a 2 stage thermostat but then you need an extra wire to the thermostat. Get a experienced Carrier tech to do an annual checkup and have him show you which setup you have. Been a couple of yrs since I have seen one.
