System: Heat Pump - Trane TWX030 Air Handler - Trane TWE031 Thermostat - Chronotherm III
Problem: During the summer, I noticed that my system was not cooling very well. It seemed like the system was on nonstop. Now that it is cold and I am running the heat, the Aux light on the thermostat is always on.
Monday: I had a service company come and do an inspection of the system. I assumed that they would say that the refridgerant was low and that would be the end of it. On test day it was 52 degrees outside and the thermostat was set at 80 for the testing. What I got from the guy was that the freon was fine (65/195) and that I need to buy a new system. Here is why. 1. $400 to clean the blower 2. $400 to clean the indoor coil 3. $400 to clean the outdoor coil 4. $1000 to change a defaulty defrost control board
He said that it didn't make sense to spend that money on an outdated system. I see his point. However, I have since cleaned the blower, indoor coil, outdoor coil and have found that I can buy a defrost control board for $200.
Question: Is the control board bad? The only thing that the service guy did was move the wire on the control board to "test" and said that the unit was not switching to defrost mode. In normal mode, the LED blinked 1 / second and in test mode several times / second. How did they guy know that it wasn't the temperature sensor, reverse valve, thermostat? Is there testing that I can do to prove that the control board is bad?
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for your expertise.
Gabe

GET SOMEONE ELSE!
Test ONLY does that TEST the indicator. FORCE DEFrost will in inititate defrost. The pressures may have been ok at the time, but the compressor may be running all the time.
The prices ARE OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!! I live in NE TN, and would gladly drive to Va to do the work for that price, JUST kidding. Good luck.
