I have a 2 story Colonial home. Upstairs there are 2 zones - there is one thermostat in the MBR and a second at the other end of the home in a room over the garage that I use for an office. My problem is that - whether I am calling for heat or A/C - the system over the garage only comes on if the thermostat in the MBR is on AND calling for heat or A/C as well. This is a new home and as soon as we moved in I installed programmable thermostats in both zones so it is very likely that I did something wrong however I followed the installation instructions and I am not sure even with the original thermostats that this every worked correctly. (As when we moved in it was spring and we weren't turning on either the heat or the A/C). Can anyone offer any suggestions ? Thanks in advance - my office is freezing as it was in the 20's last night here in CT !

Do you have both stat connected to a zone control board or is the office stat only controlling a damper? In this area, zone control boards are in a closet or next to the furnace.

Across from the furnace is the air handler unit - attached to the air handler is a small unit about the size of a pack of cigarettes, with 9 terminals on it. 8 of the terminals have wires connected to them. There is writing on the unit that indicates this has something to do with the thermostat. If you send me your e-mail address I can send you pictures of this unit and the thermostat in the office. Thanks for your help !

I have posted pictures here: http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k125/gearity09/furnace /
The pictures are of the MBR thermistat, the office thermostat and 2 pictures of the wiring unit attached to the air handler in the basement (across from the furnace) where it appears wires from the thermostats (there is also one other thermostat, for the first floor) come together, although I am not sure what exactly this unit does....thanks for any help offered !

That relay doesn't look like a zone control.

Other then this thing hanging off of the air handler, there is nothing else, just the 2 thermostats upstairs....

That relay will not give you full heating and cooling control from your second stat. If you have a damper in place now, you should be able to get a better price on a real zone control system.

Sorry for the ignorance but how do I know if I have a damper in place ? Also, are there specific zone controls units for forced hot air systems vs. other systems ? Is that something a novice can install ? Thanks for all your help !
