Folks,

Have an older Honeywell (ca. 1990) round thermostat (w/mercury). The temp sensor won't go over 15C/60F no matter how warm it gets in the room, so I purchased a programmable Honeywell RTH7000 series. Instructions say that one MUST ignore the wire colours and use the wire letter from the terminal on the original thermostat.

There's the rub, Honeywell _had_ no letters on the terminals back circa 1990. There are two wires going from the thermostat to the basement, red and white. Looks like telephone wiring. I'm tempted to connect the red wire to R and the white wire to W; can someone advise how to proceed? I have a multimeter but have never used it on AC before, so I don't know what to test.

So I followed the wire from the T-stat back to the furnace, and even the furnace (Honeywell controller) does not label the terminals. It would greatly help to find out what each wire does, so I can decide...

Much obliged !

Thanks
Rob in Vermont

Red to R and the other wire to W.
You will need batteries for that application.
Function 170 = 3
