Our house is like 4 years old but I never used the Carrier heat pump in the bonus room. Anyway decided to use it but it isn't working properly. When I cut the heat on, the aux heat turns on initially but the condenser outside won't cut on. I do see it cutting on for a few seconds but cuts back off again. It does this every few mins. I looked at the contactor inside. Could this be bad? What to try? Thanks.

I suspect a low charge but could be other things too. You will need a pro either way. Meanwhile you should use emergency heat mode until the problem is fixed to prevent further abuse to the heat pump.

When I first started messing with it, in 'cool' mode, the outside unit wouldn't turn on so I pushed in the contactor button and it came on and stayed on. Testing it in 'cool' mode again later, it seemed to come on and work by itself. Now when trying to use the 'heat' mode, it just comes on for a few secs and then cuts off.

If there is 24v across the contactor coil and the contactor is open then it's a bad contactor. Otherwise refer to previous post.

on the sequence of a heat pump your unit should start out with the heat pump running first not the aux heat. Is the evap coil (the part of the a/c that is inside the house with the copper lines going into it) is it on the supply side of the blower or the return side of the blower. This may seem like a silly question since it was probably purchased as a heat pump air handling unit. But I have seen people add a heat pump to a strictly electric heat furnace and put the evap coil above the the electric strip heaters. Which is bad due to it having the potential to drip water onto the electric strip heaters during A/c season and in the winter if your aux heat strip kicked on before the heat pump you would probably trip the hps inside the condenser. I am probably going way too far into this but there is alot of crazy things out there that start with a bad install.
