Hi, I need to replace my old furnace as it has a crack in it (PG&E shut it down and posted a hazard notice). I got quotes from three reputed contractors. They are pushing Amana, Trane, Kenmore (Carrier made), and Frigidaire. There's also a $950 difference between the AFUE 80 and AFUE 95, of which I can make up $300 in the rebate. The Kenmore & Frigidaire quotes were double that of Amana and Trane. The other difference is the 95 has better warranty. There's so many choices, I'd really appreciate your comments on this. Also, I'm in Fremont, CA, with traditionally mild weather in a 1500 sft house. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks much! -rama

Hi, It snowed here last night here in Calgary Alberta. If I were you, I'd only deal with independent local dealer who carries Carrier, Lennox or Trane. I am always Carrier fan. If you get high efficiency unit better get extended parts warranty(10 years) even if it costs some money. Those units electronics parts and motor is very expensive.

Trane of Carrier Amana is a has been company. Amana was bought out by goodman and since then their quality has gone down the drain. Trane and Carrier are well established offer good warrantys and seem to be holding up best these days.

I am not a fan of Carrier at all. I have seen far too many problems with reliability and warranty coverage. Just google "carrier class action law suits" if you want to see how they stand behind their products! (actually they stand behind their lawyers not their products!)
York has a new 97% efficient model that is very nice. ( I'm putting one into my house soon!) Trane and Lennox also make decent products.
It's only a shock if your not expecting it!

Goodman fan here. I have worked on every piece of machine out there. The top three are to fancy for their own good. I have always had the mindset the simpler the better when it comes to heating and cooling.
When you have to have 1/2 a year of schooling just to look at a machine the right way you know your going to have big trouble down the road (AKA Lennox Pulse Furance). Having said that the Trane, Lennox, York, and Carrier are out in my book. That leaves Goodman, good product, never had a warranty problem, in fact they have out and out replaced a few furnaces when they did not have a part in stock. As long as its installed right the Goodman will last a long time, at less then 1/2 the price
