Maytag heat pump Model PSH2BC036K. Heat pump and air cond. working fine until outside temp drops below 40 degrees. Electric back-up then comes on but continues to heat way above thermostat setting. We then just shut it off. Thermostat has been replaced and circuit board on condenser has been replaced.

Does it ever shutdown by itself? If you cycle power on the air handler does that reset things? I would look for a sticking relay somewhere.

Thanks for the reply. Its on and off fine during cooling or heat pump heating cycles above 40 degrees. When it goes to electric back up it just keeps on going. Looking for the wiring diagram. Found nothing at the Maytag site.

That sounds like a control wiring problem, which is very difficult to diagnose from afar!
It's only a shock if your not expecting it!
