A few days ago, I noticed the digital display on my thermastadt was blank. After some investigation, I found the 5 amp fuse in the air handler in the attic had blown. I beleive I have the problem narrowed down to somewhere in the 24 volt system in the heat pump outside. I can disconnect the 24 volt wiring from the heat pump and the air handler will run fine. When I reconnected the wires to the heat pump (at the heat pump) the fuse blows shortly after I turn the system on to heat (or cool). Yesterday, thinking it was the reversing valve, I disconnected the wiring to the reversing valve solenoid (I removed the wires from the defrost board and taped them up individually). The unit ran fine for at least ten hours. However, when I got up this morning, the fuse had blown again. I'm not sure what I should check next.

Discovered the problem. One of the wires inside the heat pump had rubbed against the copper tubing, wearing away the insulation and grounding out the system. I replaced the wire, lengthen it, and moved it away from the copper. Problem solved.

You can replace the stat wire from your air handler to the outdoor unit. This will more than likely take care of your problem .Turn the power off and replace wires color for color.

You need an Ohm meter to check for a short to ground in the low voltage circuitry. Can be a bit time consuming

I've got one, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
