We had a routine fall inspection and it was found that the gaskets on the Induction Motor were leaking. The tech removed the old gaskets and had to order new ones. The gaskets were replaced 10 days later, the induction motor is now making noise. He feels the bearings are going. The furnace is 12 years old. Could the condenstaion from the missing gaskets be the reason the bearings are going?

due to normal wear and tear electrical parts last 8-15 years and motors 12-18 years. That is if filters were kept clean and maintenance was done. assuming that the furnace was properly installed with the correct duct work. It may be time to consider updating your furnace for efficiency and parts replacement in the future. The average life of a gas furnace is 18-20 years. By updating you could save an average of 20% on your heating costs if you do a direct 80% to 80% only. Find a Carrier dealer to fix your comfortmaker he can get the parts on the same day. :)

Thanks for the info. Our furnace is rated at 90%. We have had two maintenance checks a year since the Heat and AC were installed. Filters are changed each month the furnace or air is running. My concern is that when the leak was found, there was no noise coming from the induction motor. Would running the furnace with the missing gaskets have caused water to contaminate the bearings?

the higher pressure due to the new gaskets may be causing the motor to run with a normal load. If the motor has play in the shaft it was going to happen anyway.
Had water been dripping onto the motor?
