my mother has an electric rheem heat pump. when the heat comes on and runs for a bit, the unit outside starts clicking. sometimes it also makes a spewing/hissing noise for a minute. i'm fairly good at working on cars, but this is way out of my jurisdiction. can someone tell me what i should check first?

thanks in advance for all your help!

sounds like a normal defrost cycle. The clicking noise would be the reversing valve coil deenergizing, the swoosh noise the reversing valve switching to cooiling and the defrost cycle begining. A defrost cycle is required to remove ice that forms in a heat cycle (very simply put).

ok. the strange thing is that it hasn't done it before and it clicks a lot. also, the green light on the thermostat blinks when this is happening.

thanks in advance for all your help!
