with burning you might want to turn the breaker off and call a tech.
The burning smell usually comes from the dust that has collected on the elements over the Summer months. It should go away after a few moments.
Depending on the model of the York HeatPump and optional accessories installed you may have a high pressure limit switch that has tripped on the outdoor unit. This happens if you have a plugged filter in heat mode or your blower quits for some reason.
This is the first place to start. Look for an external/internal device with two wires and a red or black button about the size of a pencil eraser. You can look inside the heatpump and it will be attached to a 3/8" line.
Seems odd that Two systems failed at the same time. Might be a power issue.
