1) Just had my 2 units serviced - seems there is a very fine crack in the heat exchanger along one dimple in the one unit. Wanted to know if any issue with using something like J-B weld to repair the crack ? [max temp specified on product is 600 deg F, used to repair engine blocks, etc ...]
2) How hot do heat exchangers actually get ?
3) furnace is a carrier 48PAV. what safety mechanisms does it have in case exchanger cracks further.
4) what would be a guestimate for getting the heat exchanger replaced - service co saying approx same as replacing the furnace ?

If your unit is under 20 years old Carrier supplies the part for free to a qualified hvac carrier dealer.
Labor to put in on a national average is 3-5 hrs
I can do it in 2
please don't patch it. Not a good idea. There is a reason it cracked and it needs to be solved or it will happen again.
If your furnace is over 14 years old consider replacing it to save part replacement costs in the future that could total more than a new one anyway.
