Ok first of all to all the DIY and random homeowners reading this post. This site should be taken as advice and educational only. At no time should a home owner be working on his/her own furnace or a/c period. The new furnaces are high tech and extremely safe but once you get someone untrained in there who knows what can happen. Simply changeing a faulty part does not mean the new part is set up properly either. To the other fitters out there, after 12years as a service tech with the utility then with Direct Energy I realize that I was mostly seeing the cleaner proper installs and service furnaces. It wasnt until I went into business myself in small town Ottawa valley that I truly started to see all the hack jobs, bypassed safeties, improperly installed furnaces and boilers, codes ignored both building and gas. In the last 10 years with the releasing of the Utilities from resposibility of inspecting all new installs and the implementation of the self regulation policies this trade has become inundated with morons who think that its a free for all out here. The TSSA is largely ineffective in my experience because most of the hacks are not even working under a registered company so when you go after them for damage they have done they dissappear. To the homeowners looking for reputable service ask around, dont go to someone cause they are cheap nor to a company because its big. Do your research a properly installed hvac system in your house should be something you can forget about once its in not something that keeps you awake at night worrying. Maintain your furnace at least every second year and make sure you are dealing with a reputable company.
