I hope someone can answer this,

We just had a new Goodman furnace installed with an electric heat pump. I am pleased with the system but HATE our digital thermostat because it won’t let me tell the furnace to run the heat pump AND auxiliary heat at the same time if I choose. I want to have that option if I choose. I know it will cost more, but the heat is warmer. I wouldn’t run it all the time, but I would like to be able to turn it on manually if I choose. My technician says they don't make thermostats that allow you to do that. Is that true? Right now I have to turn my thermostat up 2 degrees to kick on the auxiliary heat with the heat pump. I don't want to have to do that. I want to tell the thermostat to run BOTH at the same time without turning it up 2 degrees. Does anyone know if this can be done or if there is a thermostat I can buy that will let me do this? This is my first electric heat pump furnace so I may be out of luck, but want to know if I can have this option. Somebody help!

Thanks for any replies.

On a dual fuel heat pump the auxilliary heat (furnace) cannot be ran at the same time as the heatpump. Duel fuel systems lock out the heatpump any time auxiliary heat comes on. If the the furnace were running with the heat pump it would cause a very high head pressure and either shut the compressor off on pressure control or internal limit. Besides it would be a waste of money running both at the same time. you may need an outdoor t-stat in the heatpump that will keep the heatpump from running in cold weather if it is not putting out enough heat. this will cause the furnace to run on the first stage of you indoor t-stat
