Without a doubt it had to be the time I was called to a house by a woman because her pilot kept going out in the water heater. When I arrived I found the vent pipe completely removed from the draft hood. Stunned, I asked for an explanation and she replied that her husband had removed it the previous evening because the wind kept blowing out the pilot, but it went out again during the night so they finally agreed to call someone. This was AFTER he had already replaced the thermocouple (which of course was not aligned properly). Well, it turns out the problem all along was soot in the pilot orifice causing a weak flame. When I informed her that she was lucky that it did go out during the night or they may have been poisoned from CO, you should of seen her reaction! I would not have wanted to be her husband when he came home from work. There's a moral to this story and it needs no further explanation.
